Meet Our Veterinarians

Dr. Brian Laing

Veterinarian

For the past 30 years, Dr Brian Laing has lived and practiced veterinary medicine in the Stouffville/Markham area.

In 1980, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guelph and his DVM degree from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1984.

Upon graduating he received the K.W. Kennel Club Award for small animal medicine and surgery and the P.V.U. Award for small animal medicine, surgery and fluid therapy. Dr Laing did a two week rotation at the Animal Medical Centre, the world’s largest hospital for small animals and a leading center for veterinary medicine and clinical advances.

In 2015, he received the prestigious Ontario Veterinary Medical Association’s ‘Award of Merit’. After working for a year in a mixed practice in Paris Ontario, he bought a Stouffville veterinary clinic in 1985 with Dr. Peter Weidelich. They changed the name to Town & Country Animal Hospital.

He has a special interest in surgery, particularly orthopedic surgery, and as such performs 95% of all surgeries done at Town & Country Animal Hospital.

Furthermore, he is the creator of ‘Best Doggone Diet’, a nutritional App that he developed to help owners help their dog’s at home to either maintain or lose weight safely.

Dr. Laing has been invited to discuss veterinary issues on TV shows such as ‘Your Pet, Your Vet’, and the CBC evening news and is the resident veterinarian of ‘Daytime’, a daily morning program.

Dr. Laing is actively involved in his community. He was past president of the MLEAC, sat on the LSCA Lake Management Stewardship Plan and currently sits on the Science Committe of the MLRA. He also helps out annually with Ballantrae Lions’ fundraiser.

Dr. Brendon Laing

Veterinarian

Dr. Brendon Laing is a second generation veterinarian, following in the footsteps of this father, Dr. Brian Laing. He has literally spent his entire lifetime around animals, ranging from assisting his father with large animal emergencies to now helping deliver puppies in the dead of night.

Brendon has a Bachelor of Science degree from Queen’s University (2009) and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Guelph (2013). He is also a recipient of the prestigious Small Animal Surgery Award from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. After graduation, he joined his father in practice at Town & Country Animal Hospital, making them a rare father-son team.

When Dr. Laing isn’t serving the pet community, he spends his time with his wife, Cassandra, and his dogs Olive & Watson. He has always had a passion for travelling, and has been involved in previous years with Global Vets – an organization devoted to the care of animals around the world.

In the summer of 2011, Brendon’s passion for animal brought him to Thailand where he did 6 weeks of volunteering at an animal shelter, a marine conservation and an elephant sanctuary.

Dr. Melissa Pinto

Veterinarian

Dr. Melissa Pinto graduated from Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, in 2018. She is happy to have joined the team at Town and Country Animal Hospital, to continue to provide exceptional quality service and care to the pets of Stouffville. Dr. Melissa has a strong interest in medical and surgical oncology and she looks forward to progressing her skills, particularly in these areas, working with both Dr. Brian and Dr. Brendon. She also loves spending her days interacting with her clients, developing lasting relationships that ultimately lead to the best care for her patients.

When Dr. Melissa is not at the hospital, she enjoys spending time with her dog, Joey, and her two cats, Mariah Hairy and Beatrix. She also loves taking on new challenges. Most recently, she began dancing hula and loves learning more about Hawaiian culture through its most celebrated art form.

Dr. Jessica Leader

Veterinarian

For Dr. Jessica Leader, the human-animal bond has always been an essential part of enjoying life. From studying cheetahs in her undergraduate degree in Guelph to researching sepsis during her veterinary program, lifelong learning has been her passion.

Graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2013, Dr. Leader has developed interests in preventative medicine, endocrinology, and cardiology. She has a particular love for senior cats and dogs and loves keeping them healthy well into their golden years.

At home, Jessica’s love for animals is evident in her two cats, Harry and Ron. Starting out as foster rescues, they were quick to become “foster fails” and claim their forever home. When she’s not working as a veterinarian, you may find her enjoying a good book and cup of tea, or relaxing with her lifelong hobby of piano.
